The RECOVER CPR rescuer training is a hands-on workshop designed to teach veterinary professionals the latest evidence-based techniques for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on animals, based on the guidelines developed by the Reassessment Campaign on Veterinary Resuscitation (RECOVER) Initiative. This training includes practical practice on chest compressions, ventilation methods, rapid assessment of an unresponsive animal, and arrest simulations on a high-fidelity simulator. An online pre-course is required to participate in this lab. This lab is for DVMs and Technicians only.

Enjoy a beautiful safari-like tour of the 1800 acre conservation breeding center while veterinarians engage you in exciting continuing education topics like: ungulate health concerns including malignant catarrhal fever, haemonchus, and cyathostomins; cheetah medicine and conservation; antelope and gazelle reintroduction in northern Africa; anesthesia protocols for large hoofstock and giraffe; USFWS Recovery programs – red wolves, Mexican wolves and Attwater prairie chickens. The open air bus tour is fun AND educational! Your guides: Dr. Julie Swenson, is boarded in zoological medicine and has been Fossil Rim’s Associate Vet since 2014; Dr. Holly Haefele has served as Director of Animal Health since 2006 and serves as AZA’s Cheetah SSP veterinary co-advisor. At the conclusion of this tour, box lunch is provided for the return trip.

This lab will cover techniques utilized in small animal dentistry, including cleaning, polishing, dental charting, instrument use and care. We will discuss post-cleaning treatments and home care products. We will demonstrate on cadavers and skulls. The nerve block lab will allow participants to practice various techniques of performing regional analgesia.

The nursing process is an organizational tool that has been used in human medicine for many years to guide human nursing students and promote patient care. The use of the nursing process to develop veterinary nursing care plans in veterinary medicine allows veterinary technicians to function in a similar capacity to that of human nurses – using critical thinking and veterinary nursing knowledge to institute a high standard of care and enhance patient care. Attendees will explore patient scenarios and learn how to cooperatively create care plans in a team-based workshop environment.

Thoracic and pelvic limb lameness and function deficits are common in veterinary medicine. Besides acute trauma, diagnosing and treating these limb conditions can be frustrating and confusing. Understanding and addressing common etiologies of limb injury and disease can assist with effective and efficient diagnoses and treatments. The focus of this session will be an overview and discussion of limb lameness. There will a summary of common conditions, as well as time for case presentations and discussions.

Following this, the sectioning of multi-rooted teeth will be presented. Following sectioning, multirooted teeth are treated as single-root extractions. Finally, some extractions (especially canine and carnassial teeth and teeth with ankylosis) are better performed after the creation of gingival flaps and the removal of bone to ease the extraction process.

This lab will be active things that can be started as a puppy to promote overall health and fitness to decrease risks of injury. Exercises that focus on strength and proprioception. Then, exercises that can be added in as our dogs age to help with OA and muscle loss to be proactive. This will also include a demonstration and discussion of assistive devices and home/ activity modifications to improve quality of life. This is all geared towards things that could be done in a primary setting.

Catheters, suturing, and coil sets oh my! During this lab attendees will have the opportunity to gain hands on experience in appropriate catheter selection and placement and how to apply that to cases in which you are assisting. After learning some in and outs about catheters you will also learn how to best secure them to the patient using a variety of suture types and patterns. Lastly we will learn how to avoid becoming coiled in coil sets and other fluid delivery systems.
